Hi, was just chatting to my daughter who is discovering live music as she's in her teens and was talking about when the Mrs and I used to get on our bike and meet up with the other dispatch guys at London Fields to have a beer and listen to you play your wicked stuff. Even pulled out a couple of your cassettes that I'd bought (wonder if they still play...) Sorry to hear about the passing of "Irish", what a sound that guy created, really was the icing on the cake. Might see where you're playing next and rekindle some memories!! Be good....

Sad I was really sad to read that Irish had passed away. he was a real character, i was a regular at gigs during his time with the band for many years, he always chatted and was a lovely man and a genius sax player. I bet the angels are going to be dancing for a long time to his music, such a shame that his talent is lost to us lesser mortals. I would say rest in peace but i'd rather think of him partying it up. Cool Cool Cool

IRISH MY DARLING
Spent years looking for you after you left for Dublin and even left messages asking if anyone had seen you... Now my sweetheart you've gone to the Great Sax in the Sky and left your never-ending mark on me... If it weren't for you I wouldn't be sax-mad and infactuated with persons with wild passionate moustaches... There wouldn't have been the "Flump Years", my car wouldn't be a Saxo and my son's initials wouldn't be the same... You'll always be on my mind, never forgotten and desperately, deeply and sadly missed...
Might condonlences to Leonie and Ian and whatever other family you leave behind...
RIP darling...

At the end of January 2008 I went, for the first time, to one of Butlin's annual Blues Weekenders at Skegness.

I saw some good acts there, notably Dr Feelgood, the Blues Band and the Blues Quintet. But above all, I was most impressed by Ruthless Blues, who played a set of hard, driving blues and r-&-b, led by Stevie Smith’s blistering harmonica playing and vocals.

I'd never seen the band before, and now want to again! Any news of future gigs, especially in the London/Essex area, will be very welcome!

Hi guys, just seen your show at Butlins Blues fest and got to say (in my umble opinion) you were the best band on show - even more enjoyable than pub-rock nobility like Wilko Johnson, and that is saying something!...Can't claim to be a blues connoisseur, and found the Blues Band a bit disappointing (the semi-detatched suburban Mr Jones needs to loosen up a bit!)-but brought up on the power r@b of the old Feelgoods and know what I like!!..Do you guys ever play in the Midlands?? Just found out you guys are still around. Started seeing you at angies around 1983 with Mars.
Kept up with you until around 93. Was present at the 'live at angies' recording. (very hot steamy night.) Journyed to red lion reg after angies closed.
Will try and get over to a gig soon.

Was it true the orginal bass player (Paul McCallum) was in the wombles?

great to see you're still about stevie, amazing talent. first saw em in the S.A.L.T. days, bout 1980, seem to remember charlie harper (uk subs) being stevie's hairdresser. my big sis used to be best mates with stevies then wife karen, & stevie giving me a harmonica (i never learnt to play). after that i think they were called stevie smiths blues band? not sure when they became ruthless blues. last saw em early 90's in herne hill, certainly hoping to make it to the maltings on the 8th.
the best 'unknown' band around..................

I can't believe it. The only time Ruthless are playing down the road from me in Berkhamstead, I can't go, as I'm getting married that day! Don't think I'll get away with sneaking out of the reception for an hour or two...... ! Damn!! Perhaps it could be video streamed...

Used to love the old days in the Torrington & the riverboat discos. Drunk as a skunk. And bugging Tony for when the 2nd album was coming out! The good old days!

Amazing that the band is still going strong after all this time! I was a regular attendee of the Sunday night jams at the Half Moon, and saw Ruthless Blues all over the place after that. I have a happy memory of guesting on keyboards at the Half Moon (pretty scary and not exactly the performance of my career..!!!) Now I've found this site I'm sure I'll see you guys again soon.
